Casey Neistat's Inspirational Presentation to the AIGA-SF Chapter | Tina Case PhotographySome of my *funnest* experiences with blogging and photography are 100% because of my kids. I started reviewing movies because one of my daughters wants to be a filmmaker. I networked my way to making connections in the movie industry and now I write reviews and conduct interviews with some pretty amazing actors and directors (like this one with Eddie Redmayne). And then there's this one with Casey Neistat (follow him on YouTube and SnapChat: CaseyNeistat). Neistat is a prolific and unique filmmaker. He and his brother had a series on HBO. Today Casey primarily produces short films for YouTube. One of his breakout films is called "iPod's Dirty Secret" which you can view below. It went viral before YouTube, that's how viral it went. These days Neistat produces a lot of original work and makes films for major brands such as Nike. [To see my entire album of photos from the Neistat presentation to the AIGA-SF, click here.]
As you can imagine with kids who are huge fans of Neistat, it was a great privilege to be asked to take photos of him when he was in town giving a lecture to the AIGA-SF Chapter (American Institute of Graphic Arts). Of course my kids came too and got to have some photos taken with him. That was epic. Neistat presented in front of a packed house. His influence ranges from skateboarders to designers, to budding filmmakers and to parents with kids (like me). Casey's inspirational lecture was about maintaining your authenticity while at the same time just getting your work out there. It's not necessary to be perfect. Neistat's presentation was very funny and uncomplicated - a lot of levity and yet to-the-point. First Slide - was a great big "hi"
Below, "I made this [presentation] last night in my hotel room" (it took him 4 hours).
Neistat's point here is that movies are more fun and interesting to watch than a plain old lecture.
Wisely, Niestat interspersed his talk with some of his best movies.
Neistat's graphic chart below shows that at every dip in his lecture (frown) he needed to intersperse one of his videos to liven up the pace. IT WORKED.
At the end of his presentation he took questions from the audience. He fielded a LOT of questions. The audience was definitely engaged. Neistat had the right formula for an inspiring presentation.
My lucky kids got to have their photo taken with some very influential people in the art, film and design space.

Below are my favorite photos of the evening, showing Casey looking straight into my camera, candids of his son Owen, and some of Casey as he reviews his presentation while the audience is watching one of his films. The one directly below shows how many people wanted to talk to Casey after his presentation. How often are you at a presentation and either A) No one sticks around to chat to the presenter, B) the presenter is rushed off stage because they don't want to talk to the audience C) you are too shy to talk to the presenter. Well - so many fans wanted to chat and Casey autographed, took selfies and was SO welcoming and approachable. Swell guy!
