Lots of people ask me for recommendations on what to wear for their photo session. I prefer to have folks stick to their own style but I do provide guidelines so they look their best.
Here are my "What to Wear" recommendations:
DO
Stick to solid colors rather than large prints. Large prints take the focus away from the person and direct the eye toward the print and pattern.
Subtle prints are okay because they are not as distracting to the eye.
Clothes to avoid: plaids (especially mixed plaids on different people), t-shirts or tops with logos and name brands, head bands that don't stay on, too much jewelry, heavy watches.
Wear colors that you've been told you look good in. For instance wearing a nice shade of blue may bring out the intensify and color of someone with Blue Eyes. Conversely, colors also reflect on your face so don't wear a color that adds a detracting tone to your skin.
Wear colors that help your skin glow. Burgandy, pink and maroon often help the skin tones.
To unify a family portrait keep colors in the same range. For instance if everyone wears blue jeans and the gals all wear pink tops and the guys wear blue tops it helps keep things cohesive
Family members don't need to be in a uniform or have matching clothes. If you keep colors in the same family you will bring enough uniformity to the photos.
For women, neutral shades of lipstick or gloss look good, avoid too much color on the lips.
If you wear eyeglasses, consider removing them for the photos because of the glare. I cannot guarantee there will not be glare but you may have to tilt them to avoid the harshest reflections.
Footwear should be comfortable, avoid heels if we are on location so you can walk, and consider going barefoot if appropriate. Bare feet instantly makes the photo casual and candid.
DON'T
Avoid shirts or jackets with stripes because they often produce a moire pattern when printed.
While the Color WHITE is nice - it often OVERLY reflects. If you want to wear white, pair it with a contrasting color.
Clothes to avoid: plaids (especially mixed plaids on different people), t-shirts or tops with logos and name brands, head bands that don't stay on, too much jewelry, heavy watches.
Don't get your hair cut the day before, you may not like the results.
Don't wear overpowering jewelry. Less is more.
If you have any questions please don't hesitate asking. I'm here to make you look fabulous!
