New Baby in the House - Capturing a New Baby Photo Session

New Baby Photo Shoot -

There's nothing quite like adding a new baby brother or baby sister to a growing family.  In the case of a 2nd or 3rd baby (or 5th as I recently took), the parents are more experienced but it's a completely new dimension when the new baby is introduced to their siblings.

I recently had an extremely fun day taking photos of a beautiful young family who already had a super smart 2-year old son.  They were in the midst of adjusting to their second son and I was there about 3 weeks after his official introduction to the world.

As the mother to 3 daughters I remember going to a studio to have their pictures professionally taken before I became a photographer.  I was sweating bullets trying to get all of them to focus on the camera, have natural smiles and behave.  But the whole thing was so artificial including the fake background with a fireplace that it was unnatural.  I wish I knew a lifestyle photographer back then.  I'll have to show some of those shots sometime  - crying baby and all.

So my goal when taking photos of a new family is to do it in their environment.  It's natural, it's familiar, and especially it's home.  Everyone is more at ease and best of all I come to them, they don't have to get in their car in the middle of a nap or feeding.  I can wait until the baby is ready and clean, and if a spit-up occurs (we've all had those, haven't we???) it can be cleaned up and a new change of clothes is right at hand. The goal of my session is to capture the authentic look within each family.  How they live day-to-day and especially capturing those genuine smiles and giggles of laughter.  It's just the best.

I tend to steer away from props and gizmos because they often get outdated.    I prefer having the parent's hands or baby's blanket in the image so they can remember that moment or that object they had growing up.  And often you will see the background blurred but people doing their thing, as they normally would, in the shot.  That's okay because it reflects who they are and who they were with. Noah Storyboard 1 What was so amazing to me was to meet the big brother, who at 2 years old, was so verbal and beaming with pride at having a little brother.  The time is so fleeting as the newborn days fade to active toddler.  That's what I love about my job, capturing those amazing moments for years to come.

Until next time,
